RELEASE: Grand Jury Indictment of Trump Sends Important Message: No One Is Above the Law

WASHINGTON, DC – Upon news reports that a Manhattan grand jury has indicted former President Donald J. Trump on charges related to Trump’s role in alleged hush money payments during the 2016 presidential campaign, CAC released the following reactions:

CAC President Elizabeth Wydra stated:

The identity of today’s high-profile defendant may be exceptional, but what reportedly occurred today was not.  Indeed, it happens every day across our nation—American citizens discharging one of their most important civic responsibilities by serving as jurors.  Twenty-three randomly selected citizens residing in Manhattan, meant to represent a cross-section of their community and serving under oath as members of a grand jury, were tasked with assessing the evidence that their locally elected prosecutors brought before them in order to determine whether an indictment was justified.  And after considering the facts and the law, they apparently decided that it was, and that the law should apply to a former president just as it applies to anyone else.

CAC Vice President Praveen Fernandes continued:

In the weeks and months ahead, CAC looks forward to the criminal justice system functioning as it should and following the facts and the law wherever they lead.  Central to the rule of law in this nation is the idea that no one—not even a former president—is above the law.  Today’s reported indictment is an important reminder of that.
