RELEASE: Georgia Indictment of Trump: Another Crucially Important Step Towards Accountability

WASHINGTON, DC – Donald Trump has now been indicted for a fourth time.  Yesterday night, Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis announced a 41-count felony indictment of Donald Trump and 18 other defendants, including former Trump lawyer Rudy Giuliani, former Department of Justice official Jeffrey Clark, and former White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows.  CAC Vice President Praveen Fernandes issued the following reaction:

This new indictment was informed by the work of two separate grand juries—a Special Purpose Grand Jury that completed its many months of work in early 2023, and the Grand Jury that returned last night’s indictment.  Once again, randomly selected citizens, meant to represent a cross-section of their community and serving under oath, have carefully assessed the information presented by prosecutors and decided that the evidence supports charges.

The alleged actions in the indictment could not be more serious, involving a then-sitting president conspiring with an array of influential people to thwart the will of Georgia voters in the 2020 election and to defraud the state of Georgia.  In our democracy, voters should choose their elected officials, and not the other way around.

A trial schedule should be set without delay, and the trial must go wherever the law and facts lead.  Accountability is critical.  Central to our nation’s rule of law is the principle that no one—not even powerful former officials—can place themselves above the law.
