RELEASE: Texas Abortion Ban—An Ominous Blow to Equal Citizenship
WASHINGTON – Following the Supreme Court’s decision to allow the Texas law banning abortion after 6 weeks to go into effect, Constitutional Accountability Center President Elizabeth Wydra issued the following statement:
“The fundamental right to access abortion is guaranteed in the sweeping language of the Fourteenth Amendment of the Constitution as the right to make one’s own reproductive choices is essential to being able to forge one’s own path in life and truly being able to participate as an equal person in society. The Texas six-week abortion ban is plainly at odds with the text and history of the Constitution, not to mention decades of Supreme Court precedent repeatedly upholding this fundamental right.
The Supreme Court’s decision to allow this ban to go into effect is a severe blow to reproductive justice, and its impact will fall most harshly on those who do not have the means to travel to another state to access abortion care. And the Court’s failure to act here–particularly in contrast to its aggressive actions last week to block the Biden administration’s recission of the Remain in Mexico policy and the federal eviction moratorium–will deal a huge blow to the Court’s legitimacy. We will continue the fight–both for access to reproductive rights and to hold the Supreme Court accountable to the progressive promise of the Constitution’s text and history.”
