RELEASE: After Sessions Ouster, Integrity of Special Counsel Investigation Must Be Protected
WASHINGTON — In the wake of the forced resignation of Attorney General Jeff Sessions, Constitutional Accountability Center emphasizes the importance of protecting the independence of the investigation led by Special Counsel Robert Mueller into Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election and the Trump campaign’s potential collusion. CAC President Elizabeth Wydra stated:
Let’s make a few things clear: Jeff Sessions championed every divisive, even racist, criminal justice, anti-immigrant, and anti-voting rights policy Donald Trump wanted—or came up with policies Trump hadn’t even thought of yet. Trump essentially fired Sessions because he wouldn’t quash Robert Mueller’s independent investigation—an investigation into serious wrongdoing that has already yielded numerous indictments and guilty pleas. That’s it.
Americans understand the basic principle that no one is above the law. We demand that this principle be respected, and that the integrity of the Special Counsel investigation be protected. The American people deserve nothing less.
